Capital of the state of North Carolina, Raleigh is named after the famous Renaissance English courtier, Sir Walter Raleigh. The city of Raleigh sits virtually in the center of the state and oozes with charm and sophistication. Raleigh has a fair amount of history and is known for its tree-lined streets and historic neighborhoods and districts, including Raleigh's irresistible Historic Oakwood.
The city proper, including everything of interest to the average visitor, lies within the I-440 ring road, with downtown Raleigh located in the center. Downtown Raleigh is loaded with attractions and a profusion of iconic government landmark buildings, museums and historic sights. This is where many visitors spend their time when visiting Raleigh, with most of the area being easy to explore on foot. You can cover the majority of the major attractions in a day and those visitors who don't fancy walking can make use of the Raleigh Trolley.

Glenwood South is an up-and-coming part of downtown Raleigh that is well worth a look if you have the time. The area has largely been renovated and there are numerous smart shops and restaurants lining the once boring and non-descript streets.
Raleigh Locations and Districts: Historic Oakwood District - Raleigh, North Carolina (NC), USA
A perfectly preserved slice of Victorian America, the Historic Oakwood district is the number one area in Raleigh for the historian. Oakwood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the largest and most comprehensive historic district in the city, covering 20 blocks. The homes here were constructed between 1870 and 1912, and the focus of the area is Raleigh's historic Oakwood Cemetery, situated next to Oakwood Park.

Cameron Village is a 1950s district of Raleigh to the north of downtown, known for its ranch-style homes and excellent shopping. The popular Cameron Village Shopping Center has been here as long as the village itself and is complemented by a plethora of trendy boutiques and some wonderful eateries.

The Warehouse district is another up-and-coming area of downtown Raleigh, complete with converted warehouses and some top nightspots. Raleigh's Warehouse district is best visited at night when the area's flashy restaurants, bars and nightclubs come to life.
